The Word of God ♦ Bible vs other writings
Bible vs. Vedas
The holy writings of Hinduism are included in the collection of text called “the Vedas”, which means “knowledge”. The texts were written about one thousand years after the time when they were created, and until then, they were memorized in order to be accurately transmitted. “Rig Veda” is the oldest text, and represents one of the oldest antique literature, being dated around 1400 - 1500 BC. The entire collection of text is enormous and it is hard to understand even for the most educated people. They do not contain any predictive prophecy or miracles that could confirm the divine origin of the texts.
The Vedas speak about many gods, each of them praised as if it was the most important god. Their descriptions were overlapping, so later writings considered all these gods as the representation of a single Ultimate Reality. Sacrifices are part of Hindu practices, however not for obtaining sin forgiveness, but instead for obtaining the favor of the gods and salvation. There are studies that tend to prove that hinduism came from a monotheistic religion, but later it digressed from the worship of a single god, to the worship of many gods. Even the story of a great flood is found in Vedas writings, with a narrative which resembles part of the biblical account.
The Vedas contain a lot of contradictions, but the Hindus do not consider this as an argument against the divine origin of the texts. Even more, they consider that both parts of a contradiction should be considered as valid and authoritative.
Another important thing that worth mentioning is the fact that the Vedas contain morally reprehensible teachings, which include obscene ceremonies, racial prejudices, bestiality, rape, murder, human sacrifice and other immoral practices.
One of the most important beliefs in Hinduism is “karma”. This doctrine says that people's lives are determined by the way they acted and lived in previous lives. Reincarnation is another teaching, saying that after death, people will be reborn in another body depending on the “karma” of past actions. One of the consequences of this belief is the protection of all life forms, which is considered divine. The main purpose of Hindus is to escape from this cycle of rebirths caused by “karma”. In order to achieve this, they practice yoga and meditation.
