What is the Big Bang?

The most common explanation for the origin of our Universe is the Big Bang model, which assumes that space, time, matter and energy suddenly appeared 13.8 billions of years ago, as a small and hot expanding state. During time, this model was adapted to fit new discoveries, and right now we have a modern view that understands the Big Bang as an “uncaused cause”.

The main secular view is that in the first few hundred thousand years, the universe was small enough in order to absorb the already emitted radiation. This cycle of emitting radiation and absorbing it again lasted until the universe got in a cooler state, estimated to be around 3000 K, called “The Age of Decoupling”. By that time, stable atoms of hydrogen supposedly formed and the radiation started to travel through the universe. The expansion of the universe, considered to be a thousandfold until today, should have proportionally reduced the temperature of the background radiation, bringing it today to about 3 K.

Big Bang has earned wide credibility by the discovery in 1964 of the “Cosmic Microwave Background” (often called CMB), which is a low-temperature electromagnetic radiation in the microwave spectrum, arriving on Earth from all directions. It was calculated to have about 2.73 K and was emphasized to be the exact prediction of the Big Bang model.

Since the initial discovery of CMB, a lot of other discoveries have challenged BIg Bang theory, so it had to be modified (or “adapted”, as cosmologists say), in order to support the findings.

In the past few years, some of the secular astronomers started to abandon the Big Bang model because of its problems, and tried to explain the origins of the universe by other means. But still, the Big Bang continues to be the main secular view.
