Cosmic Inflation

Since the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (often called CMB), there were a series of observations that caused the initial model to be modified, or “adapted” as cosmologists like to call it.

Radiation coming from opposite directions reveals that those regions have the same temperature, which is hard to explain because those very distant regions couldn’t have been in contact and couldn’t exchange energy and equalize their temperatures.

So, cosmologists and astronomers have stipulated that the cause of this is a phenomenon that could have happened shortly after BIg Bang, called “Cosmic Inflation”. This is a hypothetical expansion of the universe, with a speed much higher than the speed of light, that could have allowed the entire universe to be in thermal contact and equalize temperatures everywhere.

This “inflation” model is also used to explain real measurements related to the so-called “flatness problem”.

Despite the vast usage of the “inflation” theory, there is no proof that it really happened. The only reason for keeping it is that without it, there is no other explanation for the equalized temperatures and flatness problem. But it is also hard to explain what has caused the “Cosmic Inflation” and what has caused it to stop.
